The traditional idea of a bridesmaids dress has changed dramatically in the past few decades - and now more than ever before, brides are catering to their bridesmaids unique body shapes and style preferences by letting them have a say in the dresses they'll wear on the big day.

However, if you've got a very specific vision in mind for your nuptials, it can be hard to let go of control!

At Blak Bridesmaids, we make our dresses to order, offering the opportunity for brides to pick a colour and fabric, and have their bridesmaids choose from our range of silhouettes to pick the one that suits them best so they can feel confident and comfortable as they stand beside you on your wedding day. They get the silhouette they want, and you get the colour (or colours) you want! Bonus points if they love it so much they wear it again after your wedding!

If you want to give your bridesmaids some freedom, here are some things you might want to keep in mind before you all start shopping:

SET GUIDELINES

While you want to give your bridesmaids some freedom in their choices, it's essential to set clear guidelines if you want to maintain a cohesive look.

Maybe the look is mismatched and playful - but you'd still like a specific palette. Show your bridesmaids the palette and vibe you're going for and have them choose amongst themselves the shades they gravitate toward most.

If you're allowing your brides to choose any silhouette in a specific colour, you may still want to consider the fabric or general style with the setting and wedding theme in mind.

SHARE YOUR VISION

Make sure your bridesmaids understand the overall aesthetic of your wedding. Share inspiration photos or mood boards to convey the style and theme you're aiming for. This will help aim them in the right direction! If any of your bridesmaids feel overwhelmed about picking a dress to fit your aesthetic, remind them that you can go through the process together and it will be a team effort!

SUITS YOU

Your bridesmaids' dresses should complement your wedding gown without overshadowing it! Consider the style, colour, and embellishments of your dress when allowing your bridesmaids to choose their dresses. Ensure that their chosen styles enhance your dress and suit your skin tone so you glow next to them!

TIED TOGETHER

If your bridesmaids are all wearing different styles, elements like accessories, shoes, and bouquets can be relied on to tie everything together.

BUDGET BABES

Keep in mind that each of your bridesmaids may have different budgets to work with - be respectful of their financial constraints and avoid pressuring them into options that may not be feasible for them. Ask what they'd feel comfortable spending and find a way to make it work together.

SIGN OFF

When it comes to your bridesmaids making their selections, you'll want to be an active participant in the process! It's much trickier to manage a choice you don't approve of when you're way down the track - so have them send you styles they're considering well before any decisions are made. Asking for photos, or having a group try on (we have complimentary appointments in store!) can help confirm all the dresses will work together.

But remember, be tactful and respectful; your bridesmaids are using the freedom you've given them, and you want them to be comfortable and happy, so try to shoot for a compromise if you can't agree!
